The word “goo” doesn’t conjure a particularly concrete image. After all, there aren’t many things that could be categorized as “goo.” But, even if you don’t know what goo is, everyone knows what goo does.
It sticks.

World of Goo takes that simple notion and expands it into a challenging, funny, and oddly compelling puzzle experience. The game’s bizarre, often self-admittedly contrived levels place you in charge of a handful of balls of semi-sentient goo. Your goal is to move, stretch, and stick enough of the goo wads together to carry the remainder of the slimeballs to a target exit pipe. For instance, an early level has you build a tower of goo towards a pipe at the top of the screen.
Although it sounds simple, 2D Boy’s imaginative creation forces the player to make tough decisions. Should you build a goo bridge that’s structurally sound, or a more haphazard creation that uses fewer of your goo pals, thus increasing the number you deliver to the end pipe? Such questions are complicated further by the game’s implementation of an impressively realistic gravity and momentum engine. Drop a goo ball in too quickly, and the rest may wiggle out of place. Stack a tower too much to one side, and watch as it wobbles to a crashing, bouncing disaster.

Additionally, the game rewards careful players by corralling all leftover boogers into a special, separate area. Here, you are given free reign to build whatever you want with your surplus, with a bonus feature: the height of your structure is uploaded to an online database and constantly compared in height to the accomplishments of thousands of goo architects the world over!

World of Goo features fun, cartoony graphics that are enhanced with whimsical animation and, as stated before, a very thorough physics simulation. The game’s art direction is impeccable, and there are thousands of humorous touches, from storyline insinuations to the 4th-wall crushing jokes made by the game’s hint system. The sound effects are sparse, but appropriate, and the music is comprised of catchy melodies that somehow just manage to feel like they fit goo.

But after you’ve played World of Goo, you’ll view architecture in a whole new light. In fact, the next time you step in a foul-smelling, sticky, disgusting pile of something you can’t name, you may just wonder if your house could use and addition. Because once you play Goo, you’ll realize: It sticks.
