Whatever it is you do for employment, you and every other American must live with the knowledge that “Tycho” and “Gabe” of Penny Arcade fame make money drawing cartoons that make Sony executives and Nintendo mascots look ridiculous. They’ve been so successful at drawing guilty chuckles from millions of fans that they’ve decided to bring the hurt to the developers’ front door by entering their own digital contender to the ring – Penny Arcade Adventures: Needlessly Long Title Intended to Preserve the Satiric Tone of the Popular Webcomic.

If you’re not familiar with Penny Arcade, this game wasn’t made for you. That’s not to say you won’t enjoy it, but as with any franchise’s first foray into gaming, PAAOTRSPOD was designed to pay off biggest for the cult comic’s most die-hard fans. Penny Arcade has a long history of awkward, odd humor that vacillates wildly between the ultra-highbrow and the just-too-lowbrow, all of which is meant to make you, the consumer, feel as bad about yourself as possible while you laugh hysterically. The game continues this tradition, blending slapstick with haut-couture and the outright depraved. After all, the narrative begins when your house is crushed by a 30-foot tall, fruit-fucking robot.

The actual game is a blend of RPG and adventure. After creating your character (which is fully animated in the game’s impressive, dynamic comic-strip interludes) you move with the mouse and… well, there really aren’t any other controls. Click to move, click to interact with items or people, click to fight. During combat, expect a Chronotrigger-esque sequence, where you wait for a timer to execute blocks, special moves, and team-up attacks. The animations are decent, and the situations are funny, but combat gets a bit stale thanks to static special move mini games and the general lack of voice acting. Penny Arcade was always about laughs first and explosions second, I suppose.

The game is designed to look like a comic, and for the most part it succeeds. Characters have wacky designs, and move between 2D and 3D fairly well. Still, even on high graphics settings there are some muddy textures and poorly done props. Sound effects are well done, but the lack of voice acting in the main story make the world feel empty and less vibrant. I understand this was done to preserve Gabe and Tycho’s historic non-audio wit, but there should have been more Zelda-style grunts/sighs or more fantastical music to fill in the void.

Overall, Penny Ar…. Rain Slick is a great game to consider if you’re a fan of RPGs and the namesake comic. The humor is there in full stride, with constant allusions to gaming culture, 1920s America, and sexual relations with inanimate objects. If you’ve always hated the duo’s antics, you should probably sit this one out. But if you’re familiar with the comic and you’re up for a good laugh (and a decent adventure along the way), Penny Arcade Adventures is probably worth your while.
