Strong Bad People Episode 1: Home Star Ruiner
For the average gamer, there isn’t a huge amount of appeal to point-and-click adventures. Less so when said adventure is about an egomaniac in a lucha libre mask who types in boxing gloves. But if you’ve ever been part of the cult-following of HomestarRunner.com, the Chapman brother’s Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People: Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner is worth your money… and syllables.

In Homestar Ruiner, you play as Strong Bad, a nerdy would-be badass who’s decided to humiliate his long-time nemesis, Homestar Runner, by stealing a lowly track race trophy from his foe’s fingerless clutches. Strong Bad is guided by your cursor as you click on objects you’d like him to pick up, interact with, or vandalize. In doing so, you must find or create the tools necessary to undermine Homestar Runner, take his place, and claim your prize.
But besting Homestar isn’t a forthright task. There are a dozen or so characters from the web cartoons, all of whom you must dupe, threaten, or confuse into helping you achieve victory. From the too-cute Marzipan (who’s throwing a party you’re not invited to) to Homestar Runner himself (who is too stupid to be tricked conventionally), Strong Bad has a much longer route to the finish line than just the obstacle course.

Homestar Ruiner is well designed from top to bottom. The game itself looks great, with a cell-shaded technique that mimics the Flash cartoons flawlessly. Fans will easily recognize locations like Bub’s Store and The Stick. Every character is voiced by its original actor, and the game is full of hilarious one-liners, often parodying adventure games’ excess commentary. I chuckled when Strong Bad insinuated that a dead plant in his house committed suicide (and left a note) due to his brother’s negligence. These “candid” observations certainly leave little to be desired when it comes to humor.

The controls are simple, but are explained with a great deal of hilarity in the tutorial. I did find that every now and again Strong Bad would get stuck due to poor pathing, but these moments are few, and easily forgiven in light of the game’s comedy. Overall, our masked antihero finds his way to his targets quite easily.

Whether or not you enjoy Homestar Ruiner depends completely on whether or not you find the namesake cartoons funny. Without a background in the site’s characters and history, gags like finding a “Limozeen” lunch box or creating a “Teen Girl Squad” comic strip (in a mini game) won’t seem particularly funny or relevant. That said, if you are a long time fan of the Chapmans’ work, you’ve probably already cracked a smile at the thought of composing your own TGS death comic. In that case… buy this game immediately!
