Starscape is a slightly more sophisticated version Asteroids, the classic arcade came from the 1970s which by today’s standards is very simplistic. All you had to do was shoot asteroids and flying saucers with your little space ship before they destroyed you. Even today it can actually be quite fun to play asteroidsfor about 10 minutes.

Oberon Media’s game starts with a long introduction to the game’s characters. It gives the impression that they have some kind of importance in the game’s story. They don’t. There is no story. All of these characters share a space station with you, except you constantly get sent outside the station in your space ship to do chores for everybody else.

Your first task is mining. Instead of just destroying asteroids for your own protection like in classic Asteroids, you can now find resources inside of them by shooting at them. You collect the resources with your tractor beam and return to base every so often to drop them off.

The second thing that you are ordered to do, as well as the only other one worth mentioning, is to protect the space station from enemy ships. You don’t actually have to destroy the asteroids in Starscape because you can just dodge them, but the enemy vessels will chase you and shoot you. You can either destroy these yourself or get them to follow you back to the station, which will destroy them for you.

The game is in a 2-d environment, made up of 3-d images. By that, I mean that you can only move up, down, left and right and whatever you do, you will always see objects from the same angle, although the objects are made from 3-d pictures. Most of the space stations and ships actually look rather neat and seem to resemble Windows Media Players skins. However, the ship that you fly is basically a blob. It’s not that easy to work out which side is the front and the back. Fortunately, later in the game, you are able to make alterations to your ship and add additional blobs to it, making it easier to work out which direction you are facing.

I’m afraid I have to say that the most fun I had in this game was probably using the tractor beam and that’s only because of the cool wawawa’ sound effect that it makes when you suck objects up. The rest of the game’s sound effects sound like they were taken from Star Trek episodes and the music is simplistic and repetitive.

Whether it’s Asteroids or Starscape, flying around and shooting at stuff is still kind of fun. The problem is that it’s not the sort of thing that you can do for long periods of time, which is Starscape’s main fault. There just isn’t much point in an extended version of Asteroids and you’re better off playing Winroids, a freeware remake of Asteroids with basically the same graphics as Starscape.
