Full metal soccer, the game that could have been.
When I was looking at the screenshots, it looked great. When I was looking at the paragraph of information given on the game, it sounded incredible. When I downloaded it, I was hyped. And then, I tried to play it.
Where to begin.. First of all, there is no tutorial, a major setback. Many people learn best by doing, and the best way to introduce someone to a game is with a tutorial. I dismissed this though, thinking that there would be somewhere else I could look up the controls. There wasn’t. I haven’t even gotten to play it yet, and it’s not looking good. Moving on, I looked for a single player game to try and hone my skills before I went online; but guess what? There isn’t one.
So, defeated, I go into the online portion of the game and search for a match. To my relative surprise, there was a total of two other people playing. Yes you heard right, in a game that only has online multiplayer, there’s two people playing. So I try and join the match they are in, and after a minute of loading time, I’m in. Instantly and without warning, everything froze on screen, even my mouse. A full 10 seconds later, my mouse jumps from one side of the screen to the other, the two players in the game move a few feet forward, and something explodes. I think it was me, but I can’t be sure.
This is what is referred to as “lag”, where connection is so bad that the game cannot run smoothly, and jumps from frame to frame uncontrollably. And this “lag” was not my computers fault, as I have a very fast, good computer easily capable of running far more complicated games.
I was forced to quit that game. In the interest of giving the game a fair chance, I went back the next day at a different time and tried again. This time, there was no one online at all. So I started a match by myself to try out the controls and see how the game plays. When I got in the game, it was exactly the same as the day before.
The idea of tanks playing sports isn’t really new, but it is always fun, and could have been a great game if it weren’t for the massive problems with lag, among others. Good marks for creativity and ingenuity, but the game just doesn’t work.
The graphics were actually very good, it really looked 3D, unlike many similar games that use 2D items in a 3D space. Graphics, however good, mean nothing if you can’t play the game. And even if you could, there is no one to play it with. This game had great potential, but sadly ended up as a waste of computer memory.
Overall score is a 1/5 for me. Could easily be a 5/5 if they fixed the servers though.
