Independent games are the wild frontier of the computer gaming world. Without a corporate bureaucracy holding them back, the studios responsible for these games have free reign to do things that larger game studios would deem too risky or unpopular. Sometimes this free reign is misused, resulting in the same uninspiring junk larger companies would force upon us. Bit Blot has used this power wisely to make Aquaria, a gorgeous game that tells a compelling story.

Naija is a mermaid-like creature who spends her days basking in the idyllic beauty of her undersea paradise. One day, she encounters a mysterious black-robed creature who shows her frightening images that are impossible for her to comprehend. It feels like a dream to Naija, but it’s one that changes her completely. She abandons her home to explore the water and discover her origins. Only Naija’s narration (which is voiced beautifully) and the action in the game guide the player.
The game bears a striking resemblance to Ecco the Dolphin, released over 15 years ago, but beyond Naija’s movements and the underwater setting, the similarities end. Naija’s singing can channel something called the Verse. With the Verse, she can manipulate plants, cast magic spells, and even cook! All of this is explained entirely through the seamless narration and occasional prompts to press buttons.

Outside Naija’s peaceful sanctuary lurk dangerous creatures. Naija starts out only with a shield spell to protect herself from harm, but eventually learns better ways of protecting herself. Combat is a minor part of Aquaria, however, as the meat of the game lies in its more cerebral elements. Every element in the game from trying out new Verse melodies to experimenting with cooking is worth exploring. There’s never a moment where you feel like things are stacked unfairly against you, and when you’re ready for the plot to develop, it’s never too hard to find out what happens next.

Aquaria looks and sounds impressive. Everything from the little lobsters to the huge nautilus is hand-drawn in painstaking detail. Naija’s movements are appropriately fluid and graceful, and watching her dart from wall to wall is a sight to behold. The music is absolutely beautiful, and the sound effects lend an otherworldly quality to the game.

If you’re looking for an epic adventure, look no further than Aquaria. You rarely see independently-made games that tell a story this well. When you also factor in that Aquaria is fun to play and looks stunning, you’ve got a game that can easily stand toe to toe with anything the big-name studios have to offer.
