Independent games are the wild frontier of the computer gaming world. Without a corporate bureaucracy holding them back, the studios responsible for these games have free reign to do things that larger game studios would deem too risky or unpopular. Sometimes this free reign is misused, resulting in the same uninspiring junk larger companies would force upon us. Bit Blot has used this power wisely to make Aquaria, a gorgeous game that tells a compelling story.

Hell’s Kitchen is a game soon to be released in the US on several platforms. This review is based off the PC version. The game is based on a reality TV show on FOX. The premises show is about a chef known for his flaming temper, foul mouth, and excellent cooking skills. His name is Gordon Ramsay. The show has chefs competing on opposing teams to complete challenges, and conduct dinner service at the Hell’s Kitchen restaurant. If you were hoping to have an experience similar to the show, prepare for disappointment.

The game play involves the dining area, and the kitchen. Running the dining area includes seating your customers, taking their orders, you will need to tell your waiter to deliver the food, remove the plates between starters, main course, and after their dessert. Running the kitchen involves stirring ingredients, and dragging specified ingredients to a picture hovering above the cooking device for every order. You must wait for the ingredients are prepared before you cook them, watch a timer so they don’t get burned and place the dishes on the counter to be sent to the dining area. You have to constantly switch back and forth between the dining area and the kitchen.

During the whole time in both the dining and kitchen areas there will be a flaming time meter, as time passes the flame slowly goes down. Quickly addressing issues in the dining area, and accuracy in making the food causes the flaming time meter goes up. So you must be quick with the mouse and click accurately. This combination makes this game great for players who like having to think quickly.

The graphics are a outdated, the animated character of Chef Ramsay looks somewhat like the real Chef Ramsay. But don’t buy this game if you are looking for next generation graphics. The graphics fail to make you feel you are on the show.

The sound is just a low background noise; it doesn’t change at all during the game. Some variety would have been nice, maybe at least play the main theme song in the background. In a short amount of time you probably won’t even notice the background music while playing.

The creativity is severely lacking based on content. The game is extremely repetitious. Each day of the game you do basically the same thing only it gets a little harder. Over time you feel like you are in an endless loop of doing the exact same thing over and over each level you reach.

There is not much innovation to be found in this game. If you haven’t seen the show, the game could possibly convince you the show is boring. There is no excitement in this game. The only positive thing is that if you like quick thinking; you definitely feel the pressure as if you were on the show.
The bottom line: The game is not worth buying.

If you enjoy playing games that involve balls and paddles like Breakout, you will enjoy Spring Up even more. With its different scenarios for each level, it is more challenging and exciting than its traditional counterpart.

GAME PLAY (4/5):
Playing Spring Up is quite straight forward but challenging. To start playing the game, I selected adventure from the menu. I wanted to have a quick game but I had to complete the adventure stage first before I was allowed to do so. In order to obtain as many points as possible, I had to catch as many balls and bricks of various colors as possible with my paddle. However, unlike Breakout, I had to launch a ball to hit a brick or another ball with a matching color to get some points. As it was with Breakout, I had to move my paddle to catch the falling balls or bricks to add more points to my score. Only balls or bricks that had been directly or indirectly hit earlier by the ball I launched could give me the extra points. Sometimes a falling ball might increased in size. Hitting such a ball might either expand or shrink the size of the paddle. A larger paddle was definitely a plus, but a smaller one made it harder for me hit back balls and bricks. I was introduced to a new and more challenging scenario for each level I progressed to. A total of 72 levels are available in this game. Before I move to next level, a notice telling me my accumulate score which was presented in terms of credits was displayed. The more I score, the more credits I could obtained. I could used the credits to purchase add-ons for my garden by clicking on the appropriate dollar sign on the garden. However, if you believe you can get a high score without any add-ons, it is better that you do not click on any of the dollar signs as clicking can reduce your score.

GAME CONTROL (5/5):
Controlling this game was rather easy. All I needed was a PC mouse that worked. To move the paddle, I just had to move my mouse. To launch a ball, all I needed to do was to click on the left button. The only challenge I had to face was I had to aim carefully so that the ball I launched could hit another ball or a brick of the same color. At little patience was also required in the game.

GRAPHICS (4/5):
The graphics were almost excellent. Every level had a different garden layout with balls or bricks of various colors.

SOUND (5/5):
The background music was very sweet and soothing. The sound effect was also wonderful. The note goes higher as I hit with my paddle, more balls dropping as a result of a launch.

INNOVATION(4/5):
Some great innovations I found in this game were the different scenarios for each level, the ability of expanding or contracting the size of my paddle by hitting on enlarged balls, and the animation involved. The interesting animation made this game fun to play with. For example, a falling ball or a brick may hit a wooden gate causing to revolve and affect its direction as it fell. At some levels, the bricks or balls moved in various directions making the task of hitting the correct object more challenging.

CREATIVITY (4/5):
The game creator was indeed creative with the animation involved.

Overall, I give this game a four out of five.

Under the guise of a storyline about ancient Egypt, Saqqarah by Codeminion is a basic game of line up the symbols in rows of at least three to eliminate them and eventually meet the goal. On the surface this would appear to be just a rehash of an old game, which it is, but what it may lack in new concept, the game makes up for in graphics and addictive fun.

When I first started playing Empire of the Gods, I got excited because of the title. It is an incredibly catchy title that really makes you feel like you’re going to be building an empire for the Gods. Unfortunately, the name is slightly deceiving. Sure, you’re building an empire for the Gods, but the only thing you are responsible for are the single monuments in each town. The name can be a bit deceiving for those hoping for a more hands on type of game.
