With some games, you can tell the developers had unlimited funds, state-of-the-art technology, and the most brilliant minds in the industry. It all comes together in a whirlwind of addictive perfection. Halo. Warcraft. Grand Theft Auto. Then, there are the games where a little slacking here and there leads to a big disaster. Big Rigs. Kabuki Warriors. Finally, you have games like Rag Doll Masters.

In Rag Doll Masters, the characters are, obviously, rag dolls. These dolls are in what seems to be a death match, as the losing doll is disintegrated and replaced with a slightly better doll. Hits are awarded when the head or body collide with the arms, legs or head of the opposing doll. Arms and legs can deflect oncoming hits and when the dolls head-butt, both dolls take damage. Without the benefit of bones, players can only control the direction the doll is moving. At its core, Rag Doll Masters is entirely physics-based, so the limbs just kind of flail around based on the momentum of the doll and collision with opponents and walls.

Rag Doll Masters is the epitome of everything that made my Packard Bell 386 inferior to my most recent iPod. Its characters look like the stick figures I drew with Paintbrush, its special effects are comparable to winning a hand of original Solitaire, its background is like that hippy-dippy block screensaver that I used if I couldn’t think of anything clever to write on the Marquee, and controlling the rag doll is every bit as futile as controlling the ship in Asteroids.
In its graphical shortcomings, however, is a sort of perfection. Simplicity works. Rag Doll Masters is creative and fun, something a little bit different from the puzzle games we’ve grown accustomed to in the low-budget market. Games don’t need to be visually stunning to hold my attention and I don’t need a directory of combo moves to feel worthy of battle. So what if half my attempted blows end with my ramming my character’s head into the arm of the opposing character? So what if, instead of blood and guts, the dead character explodes into marbles? So what if the arena is a two-dimensional square with no environmental variations? If people didn’t want this sort of game, we wouldn’t have old Atari games still available for all platforms from Playstation 3 to cell phones.

Rag Doll Masters isn’t going to replace the industry kings. At best, it’s a game to play while your internet’s down or during commercial breaks or when your boss isn’t looking. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; we need these games. We all love games that serve no function at all except to simply shut down our brains. Rag Doll Masters does that in the most direct way possible. This game is absolutely worth the meager $9.95 for the full version!
