If there’s a game that has been remade to death over the years, it’s Monopoly. The tried and true formula of buying real estate and forcing other players into bankruptcy has gone through so many iterations that it’s hard to keep track of them all.

So it was only a matter of time before somebody came along and blasted Monopoly off into space. The result is the drastically redesigned (yet fundamentally identical) Galactic Imperia, created by Switlle Media.

If you’ve ever played Monopoly then you know exactly how Galactic Imperia works. You get a game piece, you’re set on a board, you roll the dice, and you go around collecting properties. Once you collect all the properties of a particular color you can build rockets’ (replacing houses in this game) that greatly increase the amount of money other players must pay you as rent whenever they land on your squares. The winner is the only player left with property and money at the end of the game.

The real changes are aesthetic. Switlle Media has taken the classic board and completely redesigned Monopoly with a space-based theme in mind. The premise behind the game is not to rule the neighborhood as the premiere property owner but rather to rule the galaxy. You represent one of six different cultures, each with a bit of back story provided to give the game some extra flare.

The game board, rather than relying on the familiar primary color scheme, is replete with bright neon signs and 3D graphics that keep the eye interested in the action. Every move in the game is meticulously carried out. After clicking a button you’ll see the dice drop, clunk around in the centre of the board for a bit and then fall to rest on your number, after which your spaceship will take off for its destined square, always accompanied by a sound clip of the pilot. The process is a bit slow (and difficult to track at times, because the board never stops revolving) but given that the graphics on Galactic Imperia are nice to look at, you won’t mind.

Not for a while, anyway. Unfortunately for avid Monopoly players out there, it doesn’t take long to realize that you could play a round of Monopoly much more quickly by simply pulling the board out of the closet. The overall experience is essentially the same. More, you won’t have to deal with the broken English that plagues Galactic Imperia, making it difficult to play for beginners. The only real extra that Galactic Imperia brings to the table is providing computer players of varying skills who can substitute for flesh-and-blood friends.

Galactic Imperia is a nice looking game, and if Switlle Media had done more to vary the experience outside the visuals then I’d probably recommend it. At the very least it’s worth downloading Galactic Imperia to get a look at the effort that went into the graphics. I can’t say I’d ever buy Galactic Imperia, but given how smoothly it runs, the game is at least a good advertisement for Switlle Media. 3/5.
