Dairy Dash is a downloadable game from Play First and a spin-off of the game Diner Dash. In the game, Mr. Smith attempts to cook dinner for his family but causes a block-wide power outage instead. Consequently, his family heads to Flo’s Diner, the diner from Diner Dash, for dinner. While there, Mrs. Smith reads a letter from Uncle Bill, who is about to lose his farm. When Mr. Smith suggests that his family spend some quality time together helping Uncle Bill, they take off, leaving Mr. Smith at the diner. Flo tells Mr. Smith that she knows of several restaurants, including her own, that want to buy produce from local farms. Mr. Smith, encouraged by Flo’s news, proceeds alone to the farm.

Initially, you play the game as Mr. Smith, who has traded in his suit and tie for overalls and a straw hat. The objective of the game is to make the farm as productive as possible. The game instructs you in pop-up windows as you go along. Once these windows open, you are no longer free to do in the game as you please. Instead, you must read the instructions and then either click on OK or complete the directed activity. While these instructions are useful for the novice, they can’t be disabled and may become tiresome for older players.

To keep the animals happy, you must feed and water them, collect their milk and eggs, and store the produce in the shed. You must also plant seeds, weed and water gardens, and pick their fruits. You’ll find that you have to preschedule many tasks or you won’t be able to collect enough produce to move to the next level. To do this, you must click on an object like the grain pile several times in a row. Small circles will appear above the item indicating that you have scheduled that activity.

What the game doesn’t tell you is that if, for instance, you schedule three feedings in a row, but only one animal wants food while two want water, Mr. Smith has to wait until two more animals want food before he can give the two thirsty animals water. If you click on the water well and then on the thirsty animal, the game places the water in a queue right behind the three feedings. The only way to keep the animals from getting dehydrated is to click on the compost. Mr. Smith will then take the extra food and dump it in the compost, thereby moving the two waterings up in the queue.

As the game progresses, Mrs. Smith joins Mr. Smith at the farm. Mr. Smith also acquires more animals, more plants, and larger quotas. The more animals and plants in a level, the faster the Smiths must farm. A lemonade machine appears in Level 7, giving the Smiths both lemonade and an energy boost. However, the machine does not come pre-filled. The Smiths must find time to make the lemonade. They must also field calls from Flo; fix Uncle Bill’s truck; and ward off wolves and crows.

Dairy Dash’s graphics are similar to those in Diner Dash-cartoonish but cute. An unobtrusive soundtrack that fits the game’s theme accompanies the graphics. Both is volume and the game’s sound effects can be adjusted in the Options Menu.

Although many of the activities are repetitive, the game is nevertheless addictive and challenging, as it takes forethought and a lot of practice in the higher levels to figure out the quickest way to tend to the farm. Bonus levels scattered throughout the game break up the repetition and temporarily relieve you of the stress of meeting quotas. For example, on Level 5 you get to collect fruit from the trees in Uncle Bill’s orchard. In Level 10, you get to leave the farm and go to the county fair, where you sell fruit by matching three fruit in a row in a game reminiscent of Bejeweled or PopIt.

Considering that I was very disappointed when my trial hour ran out on the game, I would buy the full version for the retail price of $19.99.
