The Lowdown: A turn based, tactical war game with a few real time strategy elements, Warbands is a well-polished, extremely fun strategy game that, at 20 dollars, is easy on the budget. It has both single player and multiplayer modes, including a twenty-five mission campaign.

Game play (4/5): Warbands is a turn based strategy game, where you are the commanding officer of a rebellion trying to retake the nation of Wardonia from the hands of the evil Baron Munto and his army. In the first few missions, the game resembles many other tactical strategy games, where you are given a collection of units that you must manage on the field of war. The map contains various types of terrain that both help and hinder your progress, and the units are very diverse, each with particular strengths and weaknesses. However, a few missions in, you are then given the ability to create your own units with a factory. From that point, the game takes on a whole new depth of strategy. Not only do you have to control your units, you also have to secure towns (for money) and cut off your enemies supply line so they can not create units. The game play is extremely well balanced, and quite a challenge. You have to use every advantage you can find to overcome your obstacles. The only downside is the slightly awkward controls and at times inadequate explanation of unit statistics, but these are a minor concern in a game that delivers as well as this one.

Graphics (3/5): The graphics are well polished, and quirky enough to mirror the sometimes humorous storyline. That said, sometimes the units are a bit difficult to tell apart, and it feels as though the setting could have been a bit more original. Nothing detracts from the game play significantly, but it doesn’t enhance it very well either.

Sound (4/5): The sound effects and music are fun and enjoyable without being obnoxious. Warbands hits that nice medium between music that adds to the experience without being too noticeable, and the sound effects work well with the game play and graphics. I think there are still a few things that could have been better, such as voices for the characters, which could have added to the humor of the campaign storyline.

Fun Factor (5/5): Minor flaws aside, Warbands is an extremely entertaining and creative product. It combines elements from different game styles well, without becoming a muddled mess like some attempts. The difficulty is high, but not insurmountable, and the replay value is decent with both single player and multiplayer modes, as well as a level editor to make your maps. If you enjoy strategy games, Warbands is well worth looking into.
