Ever since Diner Dash and Cake Mania exploded onto the casual gaming scene, there’s been a new genre of action/puzzle game. This genre is known to most as “deliver ridiculous requests to hundreds of angry customers at unhealthy speeds,” or simply “customer chaos.” And Build in Time takes that formula and absolutely rocks it.

Imagine Sim City minus the piddly details like “law enforcement” and “education,” then sped up about 845%. In Build in Time, you’re tasked with constructing houses, to order, as fast as possible while aiming to complete specific goals. For instance, you may be asked to build eight houses without building any ranch homes next to the river. You build houses by dragging frames to open lots, and paint them by clicking the appropriate color onto the frames. It sounds simple, but “simple” couldn’t be farther from the truth.

As the game progresses from 1950 to the current day, your task is complicated by increasing demand for garages, playgrounds, and slow-building mansions. You must constantly juggle your priorities, deciding if your time is better spent painting the condo of the quick-to-anger sumo wrestler, or finishing that second row of white houses by the forest. Making a single mistake could cost you thousands of dollars, and every customer’s bonus decreases as time passes. Wait too long, and you’ll be lucky to get anything for even the most lavish abode.

Build in Time’s graphics are simple, but that’s good considering how chaotic the action gets. You need to quickly distinguish house types, colors, and locations, after all. The sound effects are utilitarian, alerting you to new customers, building bonuses, and other goodies. The constant sawing and painting noises increase the tension and sense of urgency, pushing you to score higher. The only annoying feature of the title is the insane amount of clicking necessary to pass the bonus challenges. Make sure you have a spare mouse!

Although the game’s presentation is a bit cheap looking, it’s easily excused in the face of the strong gameplay and the well-crafted narrative. Instead of building “just to be the best,” the game places you in the shoes of a young man working for his estranged uncle, and slowly unravels a story about personal loss and the bonds of family. Though such a story isn’t necessary in a “customer chaos” game, the added incentive to complete the quest and unite your father and uncle is certainly a welcome one.

Build in Time is an addictive, fun experience. Featuring the golden “easy-to-learn, hard-to-master” mechanics, a touching storyline, and challenging bonus rewards, the title should make its developers proud. And by the time you make it through your first completed neighborhood, you’ll be hard-pressed to stop playing for any reason short of a broken mouse.
