Money Tree is a new downloadable game from Mumbo Jumbo. The game revolves around William, a gardener for Mr. Grant, the richest businessman in the state. William has fallen in love with the boss’s daughter, Elizabeth. However, he cannot tell her how he feels because he fears her father will find a poor, lowly gardener unworthy of his daughter’s love. When William inherits his uncle’s rundown estate, he quits his job in hopes that he can turn the estate into a proper home for Elizabeth and earn enough money to obtain Mr. Grant’s favor.

As William, you spend the game transforming the various gardens around your uncle’s estate from eyesores to moneymakers. With each level, you are given a different tree to tend. First, you must catch the falling leaves and place them on the tree. Double-clicking on a leaf places that leaf on the nearest branch, while single-clicking allows you to choose which branch you want it on. Falling money may also be clicked on and added to the branches. The leaves and money cause the tree to grow. Eventually, buds and then fruit will form on the tree and fall to the ground.

Because William makes money from the fruit, you must click on as many pieces of fruit as you can and meet your monetary quota before time runs out. Ripe fruit will get you more money than unripe fruit at the market, while fruit caught in midair will get you more money than fruit on the ground. If you meet your quota, you proceed to the next level and get that much closer to winning Elizabeth’s heart and Mr. Grant’s respect.

The game allows you to visit a supply store between levels. With the money you have earned picking fruit and money from your trees, you can purchase supplies that will help you tend to your garden. You will need to buy a sun lamp for rainy days, a sprinkler for hot ones, bug spray to ward off pests, and fertilizer to make the fruit grow faster. The store also offers items that allow you to enjoy your garden when you’re not tending it, including benches and gazebos.

Money Tree’s game play is rather monotonous. You do the same thing on every level, just faster or for more money. If you’re a fan of games like Pop It or Tetris or if you just want a great stress reliever, then you’ll probably be a fan of Money Tree. However, if you’re looking for a game that is intellectually stimulating, allows you to do different activities as you progress throughout the game, or is graphically intense, then this game isn’t for you.

The game play is accompanied by an inoffensive soundtrack, a kind of hillbilly-lite tune that fits the overall-wearing, good ol’ boy image that William is given in the beginning of the game. If it grows tiresome, however, you can lower the volume in the options section of the main menu. The volume of the game’s sound effects can be adjusted in this section as well.

What can’t be adjusted is the game’s premise. The entire game revolves around the notion that Elizabeth cannot love William and Mr. Grant cannot respect him if he remains a poor, lowly gardener. Therefore, he must go to work in his uncle’s garden and make lots and lots of money from its fruits before he and Elizabeth can live happily ever after. In this reviewer’s opinion, the game would be much improved if, on the final level, a tornado destroyed William’s uncle’s estate and caused Elizabeth to choose William, not for his fat wallet, but for his good heart. However, because the game is called Money Tree, not Can’t Buy Me Love, that ending is unlikely to happen.

Due to the monotony of the game play and the premise behind it, I would not purchase the full version of the game for $19.99.
