If you’ve ever watched Star Trek or Star Wars and wondered what it would be like to command a fleet of futuristic vessels in interstellar combat, Supernova 2: Spacewar was designed for you. No you won’t be courting attractive aliens or having lightsaber battles, but the game’s mix of resource management and turn-based action/strategy is a winning combination for sci-fi enthusiasts.
Supernova 2 pits the Blue Army against the Blood Legion in a large galactic map. Though no real explanation or description of either faction is given, the general objective is “kill the other team” and “make more money to buy things to kill the other team.” You’re given control of a single planet and a handful of resources, and must manage your race’s entire development in order to prosper scientifically, politically, and militarily. Thanks to the game’s intuitive interface and excellent tutorial, the goal is straightforward and fun to achieve.

The play time can basically be broken into three sections: research, resources, and war.
In the research section, you plan out which technologies your civilization invests in. Should you work on better ship torpedoes or more efficient mineral collection? The way you spend your tech points greatly affects your empire’s direction and success.
In the resources section, you choose how to allocate your people’s natural, fiscal, and human resources. You can train your population to be an army of super soldiers, a horde of bookworms, or simply an entire race of baby-making civilians. Ultimately, striking a balance will allow you to earn a large amount in taxes while developing the technology necessary to conquer the universe.

And of course, conquering the universe is where the game shines. Supernova 2 offers a deep, strategic war simulation that really challenges the player. Ships each have different move and turn speeds, armor strengths, and weapon arrays; utilizing these to their maximum potential is key to winning new planets. Space fights are enthralling with cool explosion effects, positional damage, and the cheesy “pew pew” laser sounds sci-fi fans have come to love. Winning takes strategy and planning, and beating the computer always feels like an accomplishment. Before you know it you’ll be shouting “Fire all torpedos!” at your screen while laughing maniacally.

Supernova 2 is nearly flawless. Outside of the irritation of having to press “Enter” a thousand times to end your turns, or fighting to recapture a vessel for an entire battle, the game’s awesome execution really makes time fly. It’s simply addictive on so many levels, thanks to its deep resource system and endless battleship power-ups. Don’t be surprised when you’ve stayed up all night for “just one more turn” to research your ships’ new super-laser-destruction-beam.
