The basic premise of this 2-D, side-on platformer is that Skin and Bones have been captured by a wizard and imprisoned in a world of giant crabs, killer birds, homicidal robots and man-traps. To escape, and return Bones to the land of the living, the player must guide the two characters through a hazardous, often puzzling, series of worlds, gathering the wizard’s precious gems as they go. Altogether there are 6 worlds with names such as The Freaky Forest, Scream-Ville, and The Creepy Castle. With about 5 or 6 levels to each world, and some fiendishly hard play, this game harks back to the days when games were almost impossible to complete.

Skin is your average video game boy, complete with front-to-back baseball cap. Bones, the misfit sidekick, is - yes, you guessed it! - a skeleton.
Each character has their own unique abilities, and to progress the player must swap back and forth between them using the space bar key. This teamwork is what makes the game a little bit different from many of the other platformers out there.

Only Skin can collect the all-important gems; he is more agile and jumps further than the clumsy Bones. The latter does all the dirty work for Skin: he takes out the enemies and dismantles the traps. Bones may have to perform other duties along the way, like holding a lever to make a bridge appear, so that his buddy can cross a dangerous gap. Sometimes, to reach a platform, the player has to make Bones stand on his friend’s head, or vice versa. This head-standing is a really enjoyable part of the game. In later levels the only way Skin can get across a chasm is to use Bones’ head as a stepping stone! This is a nice comic touch, but the difficulty may be too much for some gamers.
Skin and Bones is all about great retro gameplay, and not about fancy graphics. If realistic graphics are your bag, you won’t be impressed by the ultra-flat 2-D fare on offer here. Our heroes and their enemies look rough around the edges. Whilst the backgrounds are sparsely populated with weird-looking trees and mountains.

The sound too is unspectacular, consisting mainly of the standard plinks and plonks that are expected from a platform game. The in-game music quickly becomes grating and repetitive; it sounded the like the Munster’s theme tune mixed with Duran Duran! Thankfully it can be turned off!
These minor faults do not spoil what is a playable, and delightfully quirky platform adventure. In the age of 15-button control pads, independent games such as Skin and Bones offer a refreshing alternative. With only 4 keys or a simple joystick - no instruction book or combos needed! - you can still have a whole bunch of fun, whilst also giving your brain a workout!
