If Chase Ace Deluxe could be summarized in one word, it would be “frustrating.” If it could be summed up in two words, it would be “very frustrating.”
Chase Ace Deluxe, also known as Chase Ace 2, is published by the little-known Danish developers Space Time Foam. The game is reminiscent of old-school overhead space shooters like Lunatic Fringe and Escape Velocity. You control a spacecraft with the hopes of surviving a gauntlet of enemy fire by means of your reflexes and random powerups, just like the classics in the early 90s. The only problem is that it’s no longer the early 90s.

The main problem with Chase Ace Deluxe is that the game’s controls are horrible. After binding keys for “turn left” and “turn right” you’ll start to realize the kind of awkward control scheme the game forces you to adopt. In a fast-paced game that constantly requires reorientation, these kinds of controls simply don’t cut it anymore. I had anticipated zooming around outer space, moving my craft with the WASD or arrow keys, and aiming/turning with the mouse. The unfortunate reality is that the vast majority of players will flounder horribly with Chase Ace’s backwards controls.
Aside from the clumsy controls, the game suffers from serious design issues. You’re given a ship that, when using the turbo, can travel at incredible speeds. However, most stages are designed with tight, narrow corridors and large numbers of random, explosive traps. The game is reduced to rote level memorization, as enemy spawns are placed with no discernible logic. Some would say the game was designed to be played at high-speed by professional gamers; but for the average Joe it will seem more likely that Space Time Foam just threw darts at each level map to determine where the bad guys appear.

Ultimately, your space ship just isn’t fun to fly. When you’re not battling the game’s controls or the cruel level design, you can’t even enjoy piloting it. Your 40-ton ship bounces around like a pinball, and it can’t even fly. That’s right, you can somehow fall off the map ledges and die, in the middle of space. While nonsensical physics are fine, the use of these ledges in a game this fast is simply unjustified.
To be fair, the game features interesting graphics and a fun, fast-paced soundtrack. The visual style is both retro and modern, and the techno-chic effects keep things interesting. Sadly, the most common sound effect you’ll hear is the “WARNING” alert you get right before your ship becomes space debris.

Chase Ace Deluxe is not fun. It is an experiment in the limits of human frustration, anger, and hopelessness. For the scant few retro space gamer pros out there, the game may offer a rewarding experience. But if you’re not already among them, good luck sitting in front of Chase Ace long enough to learn anything.
