Jasper’s Journey is simple 2D side scrolling game in the style of decades past. You play the role of Jasper, a cute youngster with wild purple hair that waves in the wind as jump your way past hazards. Your a task is to save your cat from an evil witch by working your way through 15 levels of monsters and traps (the demo allows you to play the first 3 levels for free).
In order to complete your noble quest you will need to collect fruit to hurl at a wide variety of enemies as you search for the dragon who will fly you to the next challenge. You will also get help from shields and potions that protect and restore. True to platforming tradition, Jasper’s Journey will test your reflexes and timing skills right from the start. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that you only get one life before being forced to restart the level.

Sadly, not all the challenges come from the game play. The controls are not customizable and take a little getting used to. The arrow keys are used for movement while the ‘x’ and ‘z’ keys are your jump and fire. As you start to play, expect to spend a few lives tapping the up button to avoid enemies, only to have Jasper stare dreamily up into the clouds while getting turned into a cloud of pixels by a spear wielding goblin.
Once you get used to the controls, you will find that Jasper’s Journey offers fairly solid game play. The level design is good and encourages exploration. While it is possible to race to the end of the level and find the dragon, the game rewards explorers with nice goodies. Some items are hidden in plain sight and simply task you with figuring out what objects you need to jump to in order to get at them. Others are hidden behind traps that will require careful timing to survive.

Your exploration will be hampered by a number of enemies, the most common being spear wielding goblins in shiny silver helmets. Your first attack will cause their helmets to go flying (watch out as they can still hurt you) a second fruit bomb will blast them into pixels. You will also have to contend with rock dropping birds who are in no hurry to see the return of Jasper’s cat. Once you make it to the end of the level with all your loot, the game will automatically save your progress.
After playing the game for a few minutes you might get the feeling that something that is missing. That something would be background music. After a brief tune in the intro, the game fades to an eerie silence that is sharply at odds with the water-color cartoon world you find yourself exploring. Even the sounds from Jasper’s weapons and bounces are subtle and infrequent.

Despite the sound and control issues, Jasper’s Journey is a solid platform game. It breaks no new ground but, but what it does it does well. It has the subtle addictive quality that keeps you coming back. The strong focus on exploring and collecting optional items helps to boost the replay value. Overall it is well worth the relatively low price tag.
