Puzzle Game Review by L. Celi
Game Rating 3/5 Balls

Anawiki’s Runes of Avalon 2 is one of those “match the colors as fast as you can and make them all disappear” puzzle games that is somewhat frustrating for the first 15 minutes or so and then becomes strangely addictive.

The first tutorial screen was a bit “busy”. Four separate animations were going all at once and I couldn’t keep my eyes focused on just one for long enough to learn anything. Luckily, it is a rather intuitive game. Each level has a grid with different colored blocks spread throughout in orderly formations. You constantly get new, differently shaped pieces to place on empty grid spaces in an attempt to match up the colors and make existing blocks disappear.

The twist to Runes of Avalon 2 is that you must fill up different colored orbs by making a certain number of each color block disappear from the playing grid. This can prove to be a bit of a challenge at times, because you must be conscious of what color blocks you need to banish from the screen. This twist adds a new dimension to the game that several similar games lack.

Another interesting aspect of this game is the use of spells. As the player advances through the levels, spells that make your block-clearing career a lot easier become available after completing a mini “rune-matching” game. This mini-game is more annoying than anything else, but it doesn’t take more than a minute to finish, and the spells you gain make it worth your time. By the time I got my second spell, I was hooked and soon blasting my way though levels.

The background music and sound effects in Runes of Avalon 2 are subtle and even somewhat pleasant to listen to. Unlike some games that make you want to rip the speakers out of your PC after half an hour, the soft fantasy-fairy-woods music in this game exudes a nice, calming vibe (which helps during those particularly tricky puzzles). The still graphics are actually quite good for a downloadable game, and the animation is colorful and smooth without detracting from the game play in any way.

The aspect of this game I could do without is the whole Arthurian legend story sequence in the beginning, which really wasn’t important to the game in any way. However, this could just be due to the fact that I have never played the original Runes of Avalon, and I only got up to level 20 in Runes of Avalon 2 before my demo time ran out.

Runes of Avalon 2 is similar to other puzzle games, but its unique attributes help it stand out in a crowded field. However, despite its addictiveness I wouldn’t pay $19.99 to download the full game. There are too many free puzzle games on the internet to charge more than ten bucks for this one, despite its several good points.

Overall, I give Runes of Avalon 2 a rating of 3/5.
