Bloom Busters is a gardening game with a twist. James and Jessie are gardeners in Bloomland. Mr. Zorg, on the other hand, is a man who likes his privacy. He has been looking for a way to freeze all the inhabitants of Bloomland so that he can be left in peace. He finally manages to concoct a formula called Compound X, with unexpected results.

When I began Bloom Busters, I found that I had to fight off a great number of mutant creatures. I played the game with my young son, who played the opening levels. My son enjoyed swatting the strange, colorful, fuzzy flies which were buzzing around the garden. However, when it came to battle the really scary monsters, my son backed off and let me play the game for him.

These alienesque creatures in Bloom Busters continually attacked the flowers, fruits and vegetables for no apparent reason. They seemed to be more interested in kicking the plants than eating them. I learned easily how to swat them effectively with my handy fly swatter. However, when I needed to squirt them with slime, I found the task a little more difficult. It was hard to figure out exactly to get the slime to come out of the hose, and usually the swatter deployed instead.
While I was moving around the Bloom Busters scene I could pick up many jewels, rings and other power-ups to gain more points. Then there was a level in which I had to water two flowers to help them grow. The monsters kept coming on, and my dog Rexi who was supposed to be helping usually just got in the way.

There was a particularly difficult level in Bloom Busters where you must get five sheep into a pen by feeding them apples. It isn’t readily apparent at first glance that you must lure them with the apples. Then the sheep don’t seem particularly motivated to go after the apples, but rather are quite happy to stay right where they are.
Bloom Busters is definitely a fun game. Both of my sons seemed to find the action very engaging. The graphics are colorful and clear, and the background music is cheerful. However, the easy mode is not quite as easy as it claims to be. If you can get past those snags, the game can be very enjoyable. This might not be the best game for young children who may feel put off by the monsters and who find the difficulty of certain levels beyond their ability. However, for children over the age of eight it would be an ideal game. I give Bloom Busters a 4/5.
