Immediately upon choosing their user name, the players are tossed into a heated battle for control of an asteroid belts rare and unique resources, and are called upon to pilot a fighter against impossible odds in order to destroy and capture rebel bases and factories, or maybe they’re piratesor bounty huntersor aliens, or is the player in fact a rouge mercenary, whose sole interest in outcome of the battle is derived from his or her lust for wealth? In either case, while the story is vaguely explained on
the developers website, Astro Avenger II does very little to explain the storyline of the game.

What we do know is that the main character is somehow the pilot of an uber powerful space fighter, and descends upon hordes of generic, slow missile firing, enemies; who, judging by the solid stomping they receive, apparently owe him money, or keyed his sisters car.

Aside from the story, Astro Avenger II is a solid game, with classic arcade themes and action. The player blasts their way through each level, earning points and collecting temporary powerups, and spends their accrued points on weapon upgrades, droids, and new ship hulls. The action is mindless and brutally addicting, and the destructive capabilities of the players ship will be sure to entertain at least most action arcade fans when the quarter jar runs dry. The variety of enemies, sleek HUD, and sheer gundam-like wrath can only distract the player from the paper-thin story, and repetitive level design.

Astro Avenger 2

The system for the purchasing of upgrades used in Astro Avenger II is rather peculiar for a game of its sort, and is a good change of pace from the more classic “pick up the blinking orb” approach, which is still used here- but a whole lot less often than games in the same genre. The ability to purchase droids of varying purpose is a nice addition as well, and adds new strategies and customization options otherwise absent from games of this sort.

All in all, Astro Avenger II is a good title for nostalgia-infected action junkies looking for a quick fix of mindless destruction and violence, but gets tiring once the novelty wears thin and the hazy plot work becomes more apparent.
