Turbo Subs is a fast, fun, though unoriginal casual game from Oberon Games. The game manages the fast-paced restaurant service genre well, providing for a challenging, lasting experience. Still, the only real complaint I have is that it’s been done before, and the new game doesn’t innovate enough over Turbo Pizza to really warrant spending $20 all over again.

The game casts you as Rebecca and Robert, previous owners of Turbo Pizza, now gifted a subway car from your aunt to start up a business selling sub sandwiches. Customers continuously stream forward to the desk, where you must give them a menu, then whatever they order, (which could be any combination of cookies, soda, chips, cotton candy, coffee, and then any number of sub sandwich options) then you must take their tip so that their space at the desk can be filled by a new customer. Clearly, dealing with up to six customers like this at once gets hectic, and you have to manage it at optimum efficiency to earn enough money to make it to the next level. This is helped along by purchased upgrades to your restaurant, quick thinking, and “Turbo Service” which makes Rebecca move much faster for a period of time after the player gets enough combos of the same sort of service in a row. All of this works fairly well and makes for a fun if sometimes frustrating game.

For the game’s ambience, the player is treated to limited 3D graphics for the people, then only 2D representations of the furnishings and everything else. The music doesn’t really stand out in one way or another, I don’t really remember what it was, which is more likely a good thing for a low-budget game than not. Both the graphics and sound effects are unobtrusive and allow you to simply play the game with no slowdown or irritations, which is what a casual game must strive for.

The game still doesn’t introduce many new benefits to the genre. It’s basically the same game as before, and though there are advantages, more could have been done. But, why screw up a good game franchise? They added some barely significant new features, and the game is fun, so everything’s still okay, though owners of Turbo Pizza shouldn’t find enough in the new game to make them spend the same money again.

The game deserves a 4/5 in the end. The gameplay is fun, though not spectacular, and makes for a nice casual gaming experience. There is little new to be found over the game’s predecessor, but if you’re new to the series, you may as well start here for the few advantages it has. I liked my 60 minute trial enough that I feel that this would be the first game I’d buy next whenever I feel a need for a quick game to play over a weekend. The game keeps a good fun factor throughout, and gets my recommendation.
