How does one define tedium? King Mania could well be the way. The premise and promise were there but the execution, well off with their heads! 300AD is the group behind this decidedly dull release through Reflexive. It does nothing at all to advance strategy gaming and may aid in decreasing insomnia.

The idea is simple enough, expand your kingdom, gain wealth and then exploit the wealth you have achieved by purchasing upgrades for your castle and knock off the enemy. Now, I’ve been gaming since Pac-man wore diapers and let me assure you there is nothing new on display here. In fact, it pushes the strategy gaming genre back a few years in terms of graphics and animation. They were fine for the original Warcraft back in the day, around 1994, but certainly not today.

Sound effects and the music are passable but nothing to write home about and you won’t be whistling any of the tunes as you go about your daily activities. Some of the sounds are kind of repetitive but that still won’t get you humming. Sound effects and music are always an important part of any strategy game, if done well they will drag you kicking and screaming into the world created by the designers. This music is just there and doesn’t drag you anywhere.
The controls for King Mania are sparse and as such they do not interfere with the action on the screen. Controlling the camera and following the action was strange and caused more problems than it was worse. The whole idea was counter-intuitive and left me scrolling around the screen looking for where things were more than it should have. It’s been quite a while since I’ve had that kind of experience, and while it can make the game more challenging that is certainly the wrong way to increase challenge.

The 60 minute trial is available for all to download. Now if this trial is a true indication of the full version of the game, and it is, then I would look elsewhere to spend my $19.95. It’s fairly easy to dig up a copy of Warcraft 11 or Command and Conquer, look for the Red Alert edition, for the same price and these would be a much better introduction to the world of strategy gaming.
Although it can be said that if you don’t appreciate the resource gathering aspect of most strategy then you might find this game a better choice. No, I take that back. Just put up with the resource gathering and you’ll really have a much better gaming experience.

All in all, this game deserves its rating of 1/5. I fought hard with myself to try to give it a sympathy 2 out of 5 because I know how hard people work on these things. In the end though there really nothing here to justify a higher rating not even sympathy the rating of 1/5 stands.
