Deep Blue Sea is from the good folks at The Game Equation. Like Big Kanhuna Reef from Reflexive Games , the object is to move tiles to get three matching objects in a row. Because it’s also set in the ocean, the objects follow a marine life theme with starfish, jellyfish, crabs and other denizens of the deep.

One major difference in Deep Blue Sea is the addition of a story line. You are a deep sea diver searching for sunken treasures and along the way you meet mermen and mermaids and become caught up the mystery of the underwater civilization of Avalonia. While you match up tiles, you are trying to work some important tiles to the bottom - scrolls, treasure chests, and of course, the diver’s helmet. You also collect coins and these can be used to shop for upgrades and powerups to assist you in your quest for Avalonian artifacts. The game is a little slow to begin with but eventually the matching gets harder by way of locked tiles with chains. When you collect all the pieces of an amulet it becomes a tool to eliminate pesky tiles as you move the important tiles to the bottom.

The sound effects are on Deep Blue Sea are very pleasant. The music is bouncy but and light, then builds to a crescendo in an appropriate manner when you finish the level. I liked the little “bloop bloop” sounds of the air bubbles from the diver’s tank. It replaces the box and lock breaking noises of Big Kahuna Reef quite nicely. It’s the video game equivalent of bursting bubble wrap and who can resist bubble wrap? Unfortunately, unlike BKR there are no user-generated levels and you can’t download new ones so once you have finished all the game levels it’s all over. Still, I can see playing it again to try to beat your last score. It’s relaxing, fun and doesn’t require extensive brain resources so it’s a perfect game to play when you just want to kick back and click.

The game does require a little strategy in choosing the tiles to match up in a way that moves the diver’s helmet and the artifacts to the bottom the fastest.

Score for Deep Blue Sea by The Game Equation

GRAPHICS 3/5 The artwork is not as impressive as BKR but appealing in a Spongebob Squarepants way. The story line and instructions are written on a parchment scroll that is shown between levels. Attractive graphics but not astonishingly so.

AUDIO 5/5 The music is soft and blends nicely with the game play. The sound effects are reminiscent of listening to the sounds of an aquarium which makes it even more relaxing.

GAME PLAY 5/5 There is a modicum of strategy and planning necessary to move the tiles to the bottom quickly but it isn’t so difficult that the game becomes frustrating and could be successfully played by just about anyone except, perhaps, the very young child.

CREATIVITY/INNOVATION 5/5 Although the game play is similar to many of the matching games and the setting similar to Big Kahuna Reef, they have included new elements that add to the fun and adventure of the game, such as finding the map and treasure as well as the mystery of the undersea world of Avalonia.

REPLAY VALUE 5/5 You will definitely continue to play the game until conclusion. It’s fun and relaxing, the music is soothing and makes for a nice stress-free way to pass the time.

OVERALL SCORE 4/5 When the 60 minute free trial is over you will immediately want to buy the full version and continue playing. The graphics could be better but that is mainly in comparison to BKR. The game is engaging and will be enjoyed by the whole family.
