Whether you’re interested in science fiction or not, Darkside Arklight 2 by Pi Eye Games is a lot of fun. This arcade style game is one that is appropriate for all ages.

Plot and Setting: 4/5
The presenter of the game, a female computerized, echoed-type voice tells you that they have been mining the asteroid belt for over 200 years, but that was interrupted ever since the Krainian Empire invaded the outer colonies of their territory. Ever since, they have been losing valuable ore. It’s now your job to take their ship, the ArkLight X-52 and defend them against the enemy. I think it’s a decent plot. It gives the game a valid purpose and gives you a suitable reason for blasting away at objects and ships that are a hindrance.

Instructions: 4.5/5
The instructions include directions on the controls to use to play the game, information on each power up in the game and a description of each type of mission. The instructions were very clear and easy to understand. There are also tips that appear periodically as you are getting use to the game. This is great for a beginner. In the “Options” section of the game, you can turn the tips off if you wish. The directions neglected to mention that your number of lives (in the arcade mode) and your shield percentage are located in the lower left hand corner. Other then that, all of the elements for good instructions are present.

Game Play: 5/5
The game play is very exciting! There are three different modes of play:

- The Mission Mode: There are a total of 100 missions. If you fail a mission, you can try as many times as you wish. You don’t have to go back to the first mission. There are four different types of missions (described in the instructions) throughout this mode of play.

- The Arcade Mode: There are different, progressively more difficult levels of play. You get three lives and get to see how far you can get using your three lives.

- The Survival Mode: You get one life and get to see how long you can “stay alive”.
There are also three different levels of difficulty: normal, tricky and insane, so there’s definitely enough to challenge any gamer’s abilities.

Graphics: 3.5/5
The graphics are acceptable, but there could have been more depth in the outer space and asteroids portion of the graphics. The ships could have had more depth and a lot more detail on them.

Sound: 3.5/5
The background music is fair. It’s not the best, but acceptable. The sound effects for the ship being hit and for the asteroids being destroyed are good. However, the rest of the sound effects are annoying and unoriginal.

Creativity and Innovation: 3.5/5
This game is a loose spin-off of the old classic game “Asteroids”. The idea may not be original, but the new twist of the asteroid station along with the plot make it somewhat creative.

Overall Rating For This Game: 4/5
Overall, I think this is a decent game and for $19.95, I think it would keep your interest enough that it wouldn’t get old too quickly. Its’ challenging enough that you won’t get bored, but not so difficult that it’s stressful rather than relaxing. I would recommend the game as a good purchase choice.
