The last hour just flew by for me, thanks to an amazing game by Oberon Media called Caribbean Hideaway. This game mixes a Match-3 Puzzle engine with a town-building game reminiscent of Age of Empires or Warcraft. It has everything one could want from a computer game: nice storyline, smooth gameplay, good graphics, likeable characters, even a Pirates of The Caribbean-style soundtrack that immerses you in the spirit of the high seas. Even the dialogue is funny (especially the parrot, you’ll find, who makes remarks like “Taxation without representation!”)

The puzzle game is simple enough, just a Match-3, though matching certain pieces give you power-ups. For example, matching enough hammers (after you’ve built a Smith, which shows how the game integrates both aspects of its two engines) gives you the ability to remove any one piece from the board. But it’s addictive because you’re attempting to complete a goal in order to further the story, which is always good incentive for finishing puzzles (especially for me, being a predominantly role-playing game fan.) The gameplay gets a five out of five from me, for the beautiful synergy the two engines have to make for great gameplay.

The graphics run smoothly without any lag, interference from other programs, or any annoying glitches. It does get annoying when you have unemployed citizens just sitting around with nothing to do, but I’ll refrain from social commentary for this article. The landscape of your island is nicely rendered, with full motion down to the smoke from the chimneys of your buildings. I’ll give the graphics a five as well.

The sound, as previously mentioned, is well-done also, and the music is what you would expect from a game about pirates. Everything matches up perfectly. I found myself whistling one of the tunes without even realizing it, even after I was done playing. Sound receives a five also. You can’t hate a good sea shanty. The innovativeness of the combination of engines is definitely not to be ignored, and the creativity of the game is exceptional. Originality gets a five as well.

The only improvement I could see with the game is that the story seemed to be the same each time. Alternate or optional missions would be nice to see, but it still doesn’t take away from the play. Overall, I absolutely loved this game. I’ll be buying the full version, which at twenty bucks feels like a steal to me. TwinTale Games really got it right with this one, and it gets a five out of five from me.
