As an author it is always nice to be able to find something good to say about each subject on which you write. Unfortunately the subject of this article, namely the “hidden object” based game “Blood Ties” (based on the popular television series of the same name), is such a mind numbingly dull experience that on this occasion there may not be anything nice to say.

There is always a danger when you release a game tied closely to another media title (in this case the T.V. drama “Blood Ties”) that the game will garner bad reactions from the fans of its other media incarnation. In the case of this game, it is hard to see how anyone who enjoys the show is likely to be impressed. From the very beginning this game screams “Spin Off!”

The basic premise of the game is that you, playing the part of the television shows erstwhile detective Vicki Nelson, have to find clues to lead you to the fourteen pieces of a magical tablet, then using said tablet to prevent a demon named Astaroth from destroying the world. A story that sounds promising. A pity then, that the game play fails so dismally to hold up its end of the bargain.

Game play is split between two main screens, the Map, which displays various locations, and the screens for each of these locations, where you help Vicki find clues. Graphics on the map screen are at least acceptable, the location screens on the other hand are, quite frankly amateurish and boring. It is painfully obvious that minimum effort has been put in here, with the “clues” your meant to find sitting awkwardly on top of a background image as opposed to being integrated within it.

As if the lack luster feel of the graphics were not bad enough, the “clues” you are asked to find are often merely hidden behind other clues and are quite ridiculous. Many people, I’m sure will be left wondering as to the relevance of rubber ducks or indeed the words “Ice Cream” in solving the mystery set out in the story. Each level is timed, with a certain number of “clues” to be found. You are furnished with three “hints” at the start of each level to help you find those elusive Seahorses and the tricky letter “F” (both actual clues).

There is no real animation to speak of here, and sound consists of only occasional and highly irritating background noises like papers shuffling and a camera going off.

Overall this game could have been so much more, but instead is destined to lie at the bottom of the proverbial bargain bin. Bad graphics, awful sound and dull and un-engaging game play make this one of the most painful experiences you are ever likely to have behind a keyboard.
