When you first run The Great Tree by Reflexive, you hear the legend of the tree and the faeries whose lives depend on it. The story is engaging and I suggest you listen to it in full, as it adds to the atmosphere of The Great Tree.

And there’s a lot of atmosphere in this deceptively simple game. The mystical quality of the background music, the graphics, and even the sparkling dust that your fairy sprinkles around behind her as she flits across the screen, all serve to transport you to a magical world that humans never see.

As a fairy you must gather pollen to deposit at The Great Tree to ensure its (and your own) survival. The faeries, we are told, split years ago into two factions, and evil overtook one half, now called Ixies. They have turned the Swee, flying creatures who used to pollinate the tree, into creatures of darkness and now the faeries must carry on the pollination efforts.

At first it seems easy enough to avoid a few Swee and gather pollen as you fly about but as the levels progress, more nasties are added, including a frog whose tongue you will want to steer clear of. You begin to have opportunities to free trapped Swee and will gather valuable items upon their release that help you in the game. Your task becomes more difficult with each succeeding level but you earn star points which you can then assign for increases in strength, health, agility and magic.

The game is not difficult to play but does begin to require more skill as you move up through the levels. The legend is a wonderfully crafted tale that will spark your imagination and adds to the enjoyment instead of being just an excuse for the game concept. The graphics are nicely done, the forest backgrounds suitably rich in mossy greens and dark shadows. You can turn the music and sound effects off if you wish, but I doubt many will exercise this option.

Score for The Great Tree by Reflexive:

GRAPHICS 5/5 The artwork is lush and conveys exactly the right mood and atmosphere.

AUDIO 5/5 The lilting and mystical music blends well with the setting of the game and the concept of a fairy world. The sound effects are simple but fitting to the game.

GAME PLAY 5/5 It doesn’t take long to get the hang of the game but increasing difficulty as you move up the levels is enough to keep you on your toes. It is neither too easy nor too hard, so you do not become either bored or frustrated.

CREATIVITY/INNOVATION 5/5 The legend that is the foundation for the game’s object is both creative and enjoyable. Creativity shines in the names given to the important characters like the Swee and the evil Ixies (just say it out loud).

REPLAY VALUE 5/5 When you play well, you are pleased and when you fail a level you are determined to go back and try again. The music sets a relaxing mood and the game is definitely one to enjoy when you need something soothing to the nerves and a break from reality. I am not sure if once having finished the game, many would go back to play again from the beginning but the game is appropriate for all age levels so it should get a fair amount of use.
