Don’t let the cute “Rayman” style graphics and cheesy intro fool you, Chromodrome 2 is a hardcore shoot’em up. This deceptively brilliant game is a gem in disguise as a budget downloadable title: if you play it for just 15 minutes, you’ll be hooked; it’s that simple.
The premise is weak, but original: you play as a Chromate, a kind of atom that’s been separated by its friends. It’s up to you to make it to the end of each forward-scrolling level (think Sonic and the Secret Rings) avoiding pitfalls, collecting power-ups, and blasting hundreds of silver chromates to kingdom come.

Chromadrome’s simple interface belies its insane depth and replay value. By completing the helpful tutorial, you unlock “Arcade Mode”, the meat of the game, where you’re challenged to complete over 100 levels of increasingly difficult tracks. At first, enemies idiotically sit in your path, and obstacles are simple to avoid. But within 15 stages you’ll be sweating, blasting swarms of baddies while bouncing off platforms at mach speeds and scrambling to reach the Gold Rings that will give you heat-seeking bullets and other goodies. As you complete these Arcade Mode levels, you unlock new stages, multiplayer modes, and an “Academy” where you can practice certain kinds of obstacles, such as wall-jumping, loops, or fire pits.

What sets Chromadrome apart from the masses of lousy shareware rail shooters is the depth of the experience. The game can be played on 10 speed settings, from painfully slow to “Burnout” fast. Why play on a faster speed? Simply, your score multiplier is based on the speed you choose. The game tracks your score for each level, your completion percentage, and your overall score for all levels, much like “Geometry Wars Galaxies”. This is a great feature that really pushes you to go back for “one more try” at a high score. The game also features an option to randomize the tracks, adding even more replay value. It’s almost impossible to imagine how long it would take to master each track and challenge on every difficulty.

The game looks okay, but moves so fast you don’t really have time to count polygons. And despite the poor menu presentation, there are a lot of options ranging from mouse sensitivity to custom music tracks, in case you have a hankering to mow down your too-cute enemies while blasting Rage Against the Machine. On top of that, the game will change its visuals to match the music you play. It’s fine touches like this that really make Chromadrome shine.
I can’t recommend Chromadrome 2 enough. If you’re at home, go download the demo now. Hell, do it even if you’re at work. You won’t regret it, and once your 1 hour trial is up, the $20 fee to keep it will be well spent when you consider the dozens of hours of replay this insidiously cute and addictive shooter/racer will bring. 5/5
